In his treatment of Cereus, Engelmann included two unnamed groups, and the Group I was characterized with ‘Cerei fore regulari, plerumque breviore; staminibus tubo gradatim adnatis’ and included 4 divisions, viz., Echinocereus, Eng., Acanthocereus, Lepidocereus, Eng., Pilocereus, Lem., and Engelmann distinguished Acanthocereus as: 'Under the name Acanthocereus I comprise the species of this division with spiny fruit, but not belonging to Echinocereus’
