Remarks
Greene (1896) published his Oreocarya humilis as a new combination and based it on Eritrichium glomeratum var. humile A.Gray (1874); both names are homotypic. Payson (pp. 278, 287), however, proposed Cryptantha humilis as a “new combination” and based it on “Oreocarya humilis Greene”; he excluded E. glomeratum var. humile from his C. humilis. Since Payson cited O. humilis (excluding its type) as a synonym, he thus inadvertently published his C. humilis as a sp. nov. Payson’s taxonomic synonymy includes: O. hispida A.Nelson & P.B.Kenn. 1906 (non C. hispida Reiche 1907) and O. macbridei Brand 1923 (non C. macbridei I.M.Johnst. 1924). The preceding synonymy does not affect the legitimacy of the name C. humilis
