Remarks
Georgi and Pallas were participants in the same Siberian expedition, and Georgi (1775) validly published the name Betula fusca Pall. ex Georgi. Without referencing the 1775 publication, Pallas (3(1): 173. 10 Feb 1776) used Betula fusca and referred to the unpublished Anhang no. 133, plate Kk fig. 1; subsequently, he (3(2): 758 (Anhang no. 133). Post Feb 1776) proposed the name B. fruticosa. Since Pallas associated the names B. fusca and B. fruticosa with Anhang no. 133, one may argue that B. fruticosa was superfluous and illegitimate when published. However, in 1775 B. fusca had no holotype or syntypes or designated lectotype or conserved type and remained untypified. Pallas (p. 758) did not directly cite the name B. fusca as a synonym of B fruticosa. Therefore, the name B. fruticosa was legitimate when published (see Melbourne Code Art. 52.2 Ex. 12)
