Reference to the basionym indirect. Linnaeus (1759) published Lamium galeobdolon 657. On p. 475, Linnaeus stated that the species numbers in this 1759 work refer to species in Magnol's 1686 work, titled Botanicam Monspeliense. Although the species in Magnol's work are unnumbered, Rothmaler (Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 50: 77. 1941) counted the species and found that species no. 657 referred to: Lamium folio oblongo luteum (Bauhin) PIN ..., a reference also cited for the basionym Galeopsis galeobdolon L. (see J. Mennema, Leiden Bot. Ser. 11: 36, 41. 1989). Stearn (in Geck & Pressler, Festschr. Claus Nissen: 631. 1974) mentioned that Linnaeus's Lamium galeobdolon is a typographical error for Galeopsis galeobdolon L. Since Stearn's assertion cannot be proved beyond doubt, Lamium galeobdolon is accepted here as validly published.
