Remarks
Linnaeus was inconsistent in his usage of the epithet Pentacarpos (in Sp. P. 2: 697. 1753; ed. 2, 2: 981. 1763; as a noun) and pentacarpa (in Syst. Nat. ed. 10, 2: 1149. 1759; ed. 13, 2: 464. 1770) as an adjective). Murray (Syst. Veg., ed. 14, 848. 1784), J. F. Gmelin (Syst. Nat., ed. 13[bis]. 2: 1062. 1791), Willd. (Sp. Pl. ed. 4, 3(1): 831. 1800), DC. (Prodr. 1: 447. 1824), and Spreng. (Syst. Veg. ed. 16, 3: 98. 1826) used pentacarpa, whereas Poir. (in Lam., Encycl. Suppl. 4: 335. 1816) used pentacarpos. Since there is no known pre-Linnaean usage of Pentacarpos as a noun, here it is treated as a masculine adjective.
