Engelmann published this infraspecific name as: C. Phoeniceus [variety or sub-species] C. Conoideus [Protologue ... A specimen among Dr. Bigelow's collections seems to unite this form with C. phoeniceus, where for the present it is perhaps best to leave our plant, as a variety or sub-species.
