Blatter & McCann (in Sci. Monogr. Imp. Council Agr. Res. India 5: 266. 1935) noted that Stapf spelled the epithet as pauperulus, an orth. var. of pauperculus. However, Hooker (Fl. Brit. Ind. 7: 285 Dec 1896) chose to use pauperculus, and this spelling has generally been accepted in botanical literature (e.g., ING)
