Gardner refers to the basionym indirectly by including Ischaemum laxum R.Br. as a synonym. In the preface, p. ii. Gardner states that the synonyms included are the names used by Bentham in Fl. Austral. Bentham, Fl. Austral. 7 (1878) 522 includes Andropogon nervosus Rottb. as a synonym of Ischaemum laxum R.Br. thus Gardner's combination is valid by indirect reference to the basionym.
