Grisebach, the publishing author, ascribed the name to C. Wright and acknowledged him in the preface. Although the protologue lacks a description, a reference to B. spinifex Gr. pl. Wr. l.c. (p. 528), non Ehretia spinifex Roem. & Schult. (as Rich.) provides the validating description.
