Remarks

Bigelow provided a description in Latin, cited Pisum maritimum (sensu) Pursh? as a synonym, and remarked: This plant, which has very much the habit and aspect of a pea, is only found on the borders of the beach and salt marsh, whence it has been often taken for the Pisum maritimum of Europe. It is, however, decidedly a Lathyrus. It is construed here that Bigelow did not include the type of P. maritimum L. and that he published L. maritimus as a sp. nov.
