Remarks
Within the protologue, Torrey referenced to “Prinos ambiguus, Michx. fl. 2. p. 23 ? not of Ell. or Nutt.” and remarked (p. 3): “… yet if it [I. ambigua] be not the Prinos ambiguus of Michaux, it must be undescribed. ... Neither the New-York nor the Southern plant can be the Prinos ambiguus of Elliott; and P. ambiguus of Nuttall seems to be distinct from both …” Since Torrey doubtfully included P. ambiguus as a synonym, it cannot serve as a basionym, and I. ambigua was published as the name of a new species.
