Remarks

Ashe (in J. Elisha Mitchell Sci. Soc. 11: 87-95. 1894) treated several Quercus taxa, such as Q. dubia, Q. falcata, and Q. petiolaris. Under 'Q. Catesbaei X cuneata', Ashe recognized two unnamed forms and provided descriptions. For 'Q. Catesbaei X cuneata', Trelease provided the binomial Q. x ashei. Although Trelease did not attribute 'Q. Catesbaei X cuneata' to Ashe, he (Trelease) mentioned Q. dubia Ashe, ‘Q. petiolaris Ashe’, and ‘Q. falcata Ashe’. Since the preceding three names were originally published in the 1894 paper, it is construed here that Trelease implicitly attributed 'Q. Catesbaei X cuneata' to Ashe and thus indirectly referred to the two descriptions (pers. comm. John Wiersema; US)
