Protologue: Type in the U. S. National Herbarium, no. 45865 ... July, 1884, by J. G. Lemmon and wife (S. A. Lemmon). V. J. Coffey & S. B. Jones (Brittonia 32:315. 1980) mentioned that the holotype at US is not extant and designated the same collection (J. G. Lemmon & S. A. Lemmon s.n.; Jul 1884; US no. 45865) as the lectotype.
