Remarks

“Britannica” existed as a pre-Linnaean plant name (see Biggam, Blue in Old English: 132. 1997). Linnaeus used the epithet “Britannica” as a noun in apposition and listed the epithet in the Nomina Trivialia section of Sp. Pl., vol. 2; for the native range of this species, he mentioned Habitat in Virginia [USA] (not Britain).
