Remarks
Torrey and A. Gray (Fl. N. Amer. 1: 494. 1840), for Oenothera pinnatifida Nutt., recognized 2 unnamed varieties with Greek signs α and β. They treated “Oenothera bradburiana Nutt.” as a pro synonym of O. pinnatifida var. α. Rydberg (pp. 596, 1064) proposed A. bradburiana as a new combination; on p. 596, he provided a description, and on p. 1064, he cited the basionym reference as “Oenothera bradburiana Nutt.; T. & G. 1: 494. 1840”. Since “Oenothera bradburiana Nutt.” did not exist as a valid name, A. bradburiana was inadvertently published as the name of a new species.
