- Persoon (vol. 1: preface x, paragraph 3) mentioned: Varietates praecipuae et subspecies non omissae sunt. Speciebus obscuris, aut quoad sedem dubiis, rel accuratiori indagationi subjiciendis, signa crucis seu astericsum apposui. Boivin (in Brittonia 14: 330. 1962) interpreted that * sign refers to the rank subspecies and Greek letters refer to varieties. Greuter (in Candollea 23: 90-92. 1968) concluded that the Greek lettered taxa, unless indicated as variety, are unranked and * sign refers to obscurely known species. Persoon treated most of his infrageneric names at the rank of subgenus (vide preface ix, paragraph 2 (Melius autem judicavi, eas species (nonnullis forte tamen excipiendis) ab aliis leviter in charactere aberrantes, imprimis si genus minus amplum sit, sub divisione peculiari aut subgenere, quo etiam nonnula Botanicorum recentium genera relata sunt, comprehendere, ne ultra necessitatem genera multiplicentur) and index title in vol. 1, p. 527 (Index Generum, subgenerum, nominum Familiae plantarum et synonymorum generum praecipuorum)). [See George K. Brizicky, Taxon 18(4): 646, 649. 1969]. Occasionally, Persoon used parenthetical epithets (e.g., 1: 411: ‘Combretum decandrum (album))’; he (preface p. ix) explained his usage as: ‘in parenthesi nomen quasi secundarium passim addidi, quo idea plantae forte distinctior concipi possit’. It is evident that Persoon proposed C. album and such names as alternative names.
