The sectional epithet Nelavaga is a noun. Borssum-Walker mentioned that 'The name has been derived from the vernacular name nelavaga [in Malayalam, Tamil] under which Van Rheede tot Draakestein described and pictured a plant which undoubtedly belongs to this group, presumably to S. cordata (Burm.f.) Borss.
