Nomenclatural Notes
Status: nom. inval. Rafinesque treated several Chrysobalanus species, e.g., 1) C. oblongifolius Michx., 2) C. retusus Raf., 3) C. incanus Raf., etc. On species no. 3, Rafinesque mentioned: ‘Chrysobalanus incanus Raf. Var. of oblongif. Mx. leaves oblong oboval, white and wooly beneath - Florida. This must certainly be distinct from the 2 above, having no specimen I cannot describe it better.’ His remark that C. incanus is “Var. of oblongif. Mx. [= variety of C. oblongifolius Michx],” and the lack of specimens for an adequate description suggest that he did not accept the taxon at the rank of species
