Jackson (l.c.) listed Leiostemon frutescens Raf. as a pro synonym of Penstemon frutescens Lamb. Straw used Leiostemon frutescens (Lamb.) Raf. ex Jacks., Ind. Kew. 2: 50. 1894 as an accepted name, cited the basionym (P. frutescens), and thus inadvertently made the new combination L. frutescens.
