Some erroneously believe that T. squalida Ker-Gawl. is nom superfl. and illeg. for Ixia lancea Thunberg (1783). For his T. squalida, Ker-Gawl. referred to I. lancea doubtfully within synonymy ( Ixia lancea Thunb. Diss. n. 21?) and text. (We have not adopted Thunberg's trivial name of lancea ... the description is far too vague to apply with certainty to any species.). For the basionym, Ker-Gawl. referred to Ixia squalida var. alpha Aiton
