Remarks
Some authors presumed S. sphacelata as a comb. nov. based on Panicum sphacelatum Schumach (1827), but Moss did not refer to the basionym directly or indirectly. The short description (A grass 3 ft. high) provided within the protologue is non-diagnostic and inadequate for a valid publication; therefore, the St. Louis Code Art. 33.2 does not apply. [Moss provided similar description for other grasses, e.g., Digitaria uniglumis (A grass 2 ft. high), Exotheca abyssinica (A grass 2 ft. high)]. See: Kartesz & Gandhi, Phytologia 69: 306-307. 1990.
