Remarks
Torrey considered Nuttall's Silphium *subacaule, scabriusculum: caule brevissimo ... (in Amer. J. Sci. 5: 301. 1822) as a new species without an epithet (Torrey seems to have treated subacaule, as a descriptive term); cf., DC. (Prodr. 5: 512. 1836); A. Gray (Syn. Fl. N. Amer. 1(2): 242. 1884).
