Nelson published P. xylus as n. n. (= nom. nov.) for P. caespitosus var. suffruticosus A. Gray and remarked the following: (in adnot. & p. 32): This description and the notes upon it were written before I discovered Dr. Rydberg's Pentstemon suffrutescens, Bull. Torr. Bot. Club 28: 503. From the very limited notes there given I judge that he and I are considering totally different plants. As I feel quite certain that I have the true P. caespitosus suffruticosus Gray, I still present this description ... The specimens before me were collected by Mr. H. N. Wheeler at Sapinero, Colo., 1898, no. 446, and in my judgment are referable to P. caespitosus suffruticosus Gray.
