Type not located. Cultivated plants bearing the name Oenothera cruciata, said to be from North America and in cultivation from 1824 onward . . . are all the cruciate form of O. parviflora. The collection by T. Nuttall from Cambridge, Massachusetts (BM!, PH!), labelled 'Oenothera cruciata Nuttall' is also Oenothera parviflora (Dietrich et al., Syst. Bot. Monogr. 50: 124. 1997)
