Fernald believed that J. grandiflora Michx. is a later homonym of J. grandiflora Ruiz & pav.; with that belief, he published J. michauxiana as a nom. nov. for Michaux's species. According to Greuter and Burdet (Willdenowia 16: 448. 1987), J. michauxiana is nom. superfl.
