Named in reference to the vernacular name of Pilosocereus gounellei, the xique-xique. Published as a replacement name for Pilosocereus subg. Gounellea to avoid a generic name derived from one of the species of the genus (rec. 20A.1, ICN, 2018), and generic name kept in masculine to maintain the gender of Pilosocereus (rec. 62A.1, ICN, 2018).
