Linnaeus (Sp. pl. 1: 194. 1753) spelled the epithet as OEnopolia; later he (1762) cited the epithet as Oenoplia. He did not provide or indicate an etymology. The 1762 spelling has often been considered to be a correction. However, since the 1753 epithet is grammatically correct, a spelling correction is not warranted..
