Nomenclatural Notes
Status: nom. illeg. nom. superfl. For Plantago psyllium, Linnaeus (Sp. PL: 115.1753) assigned the species no. 15 and gave the phrase name as 'Planatgo caule ramoso, foliis integerrimis, spicis foliosis'; one of the included synonyms is: 'Plantago annua ... Hort. Cliff. 37.' Subsequently, Linnaeus (Syst. Nat., ed. 10: 896.1759) published the name P. indica, assigned species no. 15 (from his 1753 work), and slightly reworded the phrase name as 'P(lantago). caule ramoso herbaceo, fol. integerrimis, spicis foliosis'; he did not cite any synonym. Although Linnaeus (1759) did not explicitly cite P. psyllium (1753) as a synonym, he did cite its original sequential number 15 for P. indica. Such a citation is construed as a direct and unambiguous reference to the name P. psyllium (1753), and therefore, the name P. indica was superfluous when published (see Madrid Code Art. 52.3)
