Remarks

The epithet is a Latinization of Carthagena [Cartagena] in Colombia, South America (see, for example, in W.T.Stearn (2005) Botanical Latin, 4th Ed. p.213) and, as such, is not correctable under Art. 60.10. of the ICN, (2025). The Australian Plant Census adopts the spelling 'carthagenensis' for the epithet, noting that Jacquin used 'carthagenensis' for epithets in 12 other genera in the same publication and subsequently changed the spelling of the epithet in Justicia to 'carthagenensis' in Select. Stirp. Amer. Hist. 5. 1763.
