Status: nom. cons. type conserved.
Remarks
McDaniel (in Bull. Tall Timbers Res. Sta. 8: 26. 1971) designated a Catesby plate (2: t. 70) as the type which is identifiable with subsp. venosa (Raf.) Wherry (see Reveal in Phytologia 74: 180-184. 1993; Kartesz & Gandhi in Phytologia 78: 12. 1995). M. Cheek et al.'s (in Taxon 46: 781. 1997) proposal to supersede McDaniel's designation and retypify S. purpurea with a Canadian element was accepted in the 2005 Vienna Congress (see Taxon 49: 262-263. 2000; 55: 796. 2006).
