The journal was launched in 19xx by Prof. T. Simon, former head of the Department of Plant Taxonomy and Ecology, Eotvos University, Budapest, with the intention of publishing abstracts of theses prepared by graduate students under the supervision of departmental staff. A few years after its establishment, Abstracta Botanica started to publish research papers and reports written by a wider scientific community, including foreigners.
