Remarks
Although this name might be considered to be based on Salix helix L., Sp. Pl. 2: 1017. 1753 [ = S. purpurea L.], as suggested by Merrill (1949: 107), Rafinesque did not refer to Linnaeus. Thus, the existence of a later homonym, S. helix J. Walker, Econ. Hist. Herbrides 2: 284. 1808, nom. illeg., precludes treating Rafinesque's action as being an indirect reference to Linnaeus.
