Remarks
Although this name might be considered to be based on Salix falcata Pursh, Fl. Amer. Sept. 2: 614. 1813 [ = S. nigra Marshall], as suggested by Merrill (1949: 106), Rafinesque did not refer to Pursh. Thus, the existence of a later homonym, S. falcata Kunth, Nov. Gen. Sp. 2: 23. 1817, nom. illeg., precludes treating Rafinesque's action as being an indirect reference to Pursh (Lim et al., 2013)
