Remarks
Although this name might be considered to be a new name for Salix sphacelata Willd., Sp. Pl., ed. 4, 4(2): 702. 1806, nom. illeg. [ = S. caprea L.], non Smith, Fl. Brit. 3: 1066. 1804, as suggested by Merrill (1949: 106), Rafinesque did not refer to Willdenow. Thus, the existence of several additional later homonyms precludes treating Rafinesque's action as being an indirect reference to Willdenow (Lim et al., 2013)
