Remarks
Merremia cielensis ... narrow endemic from Tamaulipas, Mexico, shares close relationships with a complex of yellow-flowered merremias that produce indehiscent capsules with translucent pericarps ... can be readily distinguished from all other Mexican merremias on the basis of cordate leaves, a ruddy, accrescent calyx during fruition, and a four-seeded capsule. (vide abstract). Etymology: The species epithet refers to the only known locality of this endemic morning glory: the ‘Cielo Biosphere Reserve’ in the Sierra de Guatemala of central Tamaulipas. Cielo, the Spanish word for ‘heaven,’ was adopted by naturalists to describe this biologically rich corner of world in terms of a highland paradise.
