Remarks
For his var. glaber, Watson provided a description, referred to C. betuloides Nutt. (Jun 1840) and C. betulifolius Nutt. ex Hook. (post June 1840) as synonyms, and cited a Palmer's collection. All the preceding three names are typified with the same type specimen collected by Nuttall. It is debatable whether Watson published var. glaber as a new variety or a nom. & stat.nov. for C. betuloides. Since Watson provided a description, chose glaber as the epithet (over betuloides & betulifolius), and cited a Palmer's collection, it is construed here that he published a new variety.
