Status: pro syn. of Cladrastis fragrans Raf.
Remarks
In his publication of Cladrastis fragrans as a monotypic taxon, Rafinesque (1824) mentioned that he (in Kentucky Gazette 1822) had published this taxon as “Virgilia alba Raf.”Rafinesque’s 1822 and 1824 papers are reproduced in a 2005 book (titled: C.S. Rafinesque Anthology), with the 1822 paper on pp. 154—156 and the 1824 paper on pp. 156—157. As per the 1822 paper, Rafinesque recognized 4 Virgilia species: R. dumontii Raf., R. fragilis Raf., V. lutea F. Michaux, and V. secundiflora (Ortega) Cav., but “V. alba” is not listed. He assigned the common name Brittle Virgilia to V. fragilis. It is likely that in 1824, Rafinesque used the name “V. alba” in place of V. fragilis. Based on the information in the 1824 paper, Duley and Vincent (in Rhodora 105: 221. 2003) designated a neotype for “V. alba”
