Remarks

Greek nephos = cloud; nephros = kidney. The protologue shows the spike branches (= receptacles) as reniform. John McClelland was the editor of Griffith’s (1810-1845) posthumous publication, and occasionally Griffith’s writing was misread. According to Hooker (Fl. Brit. India 5: 80. 1886), Griffith’s manuscript had “Schizonephros”; in this regard, Hooker mentioned: “I have altered the misprint Schizonephos to -nephros, as in Griffith's mss., the derivation from [Greek] νεφρός a kidney being obvious”
