Remarks

Linnaeus (1753) included 2 species in Crateva, viz., C. tapia L. & C. marmelos L. Correa (in Trans. Linn. Soc. London 5: 218, 222. 1800) transferred C. marmelos to his new genus Aegle as A. marmelos, and perhaps, at that time (in 1800), the genus Crateva was left with a single original species (C. tapia) as a residue. In the past, it was an acceptable practice to consider such a treatment as a ‘residue typification’. However, for typification of a previously published name, the Shenzhen Code Art. 7.11 mandates the usage of the term type (‘For purposes of priority (Art. 9.19, 9.20, and 10.5), designation of a type is achieved only … if the type element is clearly indicated by direct citation including the term “type” (typus) or an equivalent …’). Correa did not mention the name C. tapia or use the term type.
