Nomenclatural Notes
Status: nom. inval. Bacigalupo intended to publish her ‘Diodia schumannii’ as a nom. nov. and cited ‘Diodia gymnocephala K. Schumann in Martius, Fl. Bras., 6(6): 16. 1888, non Borreria? gymnioocephala DC., Prodr., 4: 549. 1830’ as a synonym. She cited a single collection (A. E. Burkart 27.103 at SI) but did not use the term type. Since Bacigalupo excluded the basionym B. gymnocephala from D. gymnocephala, her synonymy citation is construed here as ‘Diodia gymnocephala sensu K. Schumann (excluding type)’ and she inadvertently published her ‘D. schumannii’ as a sp. nov., which requires a Latin description/diagnosis and a single collection as type for a valid publication of the name. Furthermore, since Bacigalupo’s sole reference to ‘Diodia gymnocephala K. Schumann’ provides a Latin description, the name ‘D. schumannii’ needs to be typified by an element selected from K. Schumann’s treatment (see Shenzhen Code Art. 7.8). Schumann, however, cited several plant collections = syntypes), and therefore, for the lack of citation or indication of a single gathering as type, the name ‘D. schumannii’ was not validly published.
