Remarks

Gender: according to the Shenzhen Code Art. 62.2( c), compound generic names with ‘-chilus’ ending have masculine gender. However, Machilus is not a Greek or Latin name. Nees ascribed the genus name to Rumphius (Herb. Amboin. 3: 69-70. 1743); on p. 69, Rumphius mentioned that the name Machilus was derived from the Indonesian vernacular names (e.g., Makelan, Makila, Makilan, and Marela). Nees (1831) published the genus name as masculine but he (Syst. Laur. 674. 1836) switched to treating it as feminine. However, one may apply Art. 62.3 and accept masculine gender
