Remarks

Rydberg flagged his taxon P. suffrutescens as sp. nov. and cited Pentstemon caespitosus var. suffruticosus A. Gray, Syn. Fl. 21: 270. 1878. Not P. sufjfruticosus Dougl. 1846. as a synonym and Colorado: Ridgway as the locality; he also cited 1895, F. Tweedy, 170 and gave a diagnosis (Excellent specimens ... have been collected by Mr. Tweedy, and these show that the plant is nearer related to P. pumilus than to P. caespitosus, but the calyx lobes are broader, shorter and blunter than in that species, the corolla slightly smaller and the leaves glabrous.)
