Remarks

In Torrey & A. Gray's work, each of their own description ends in a dash (-), which is omitted for descriptions derived from other authors of relevant species (vide preface xiv, adnot.). In general, descriptions from other authors are enclosed in double quotes (). Torrey and Gray ascribed the name O. ovata to Nuttall and omitted a dash for the description (thus indicating that the description was derived from Nuttall). Although the description in the first paragraph lacks double quotes, the second paragraph has double quotes. Furthermore, It is evident from Torrey and A. Gray's comments (Mr. Nuttall justly remarks, that the present plant shows the insertion of the anthers and the relative length of the filaments to be of less consequence in this genus than has been supposed.) that Nuttall provided the validating description and that the absence of double quotes in the first paragraph was an oversight.
