Nomenclatural Notes
Status: non P.scolopendria Burm.f. (1868)
Remarks
In his fern species name “Asplenium scolopendrium,” Linnaeus (1753) used the epithet as a noun in apposition. Adanson (1763) published the fern genus name: Scolopendrium (a noun). Don (1825) used the epithet scolopendrium as a noun in apposition (the initial letter capitalized (S); cf., P. scolopendria Burm.f. (1768), with a noun epithet). Since scolopendria (feminine) and scolopendrium (neuter) are nouns with different genders, the 2 epithets in Polypodium are treated as not confusable; the 1825 name P. scolopendrium is legitimate [see Melbourne Code Art. 53 Ex.12: names not likely to be confused: Euphorbia peplis L. (1753) and E. peplus L. (1753)]
