Nomenclatural Notes
Status: nom. illeg. nom. superfl. The Linnaean names ‘Salsola soda L. (1753)’ and ‘Salsola kali L. (1753)’ pertain to two different species. ‘Kali soda (L.) Scop. (1771)’ is a new combination based on S. soda. Later, Moench simultaneously proposed ‘K. soda Moench (1794)’ as a new name for S. kali and ‘K. inerme Moench (1794)’ as a new name for S. soda. Moench thus created two illegitimate names: K. soda Moench, 1794 (non K. soda (L.) Scop. 1771); and K. inerme Moench, 1794 (superfluous name for K. soda (L.) Scop. 1771) If ‘K. soda (L.) Scop.’ were not made and did not exist in 1794, then Moench’s two new names would be legitimate.
