Reference to the basionym indirect. Although Bentham did not refer to the basionym Veronica plantaginea E. James, he referred to Torrey's Herbarium (NY), which houses the holotype of V. plantaginea. Clark Schaak (in Taxon 39(2): 219. May 1990) treated S. plantaginea as a new combination based on V. plantaginea (see Vienna Code Art. 33.3).
