Robinson & Fernald inadvertently made this comb. nov.; they ascribed it to Durand & Jackson (Index Kew. suppl. 1: 353. 1906), who in turn ascribed the comb. nov. to Trel. ex Branner & Coville (1891) and treated it as a synonym of P. lanceolatum (Willd.) Pursh (1813); Branner & Coville published P. virginicum (not P. virginianum).
