Nomenclatural Notes
Status: nom. inval. Gray did not mention the intended replaced synonym Sarcostemma linearis Decne. 1840 (non Spreng. 1822); he, however, included S. heterophyllym as a form of P. linearis (protologue: “P. linearis is a variable low species, of which Sarcostemma heterophyllum, Engelm., appears to be a form approaching the narrowest-leaved P. cynanchoides”). Gray’s only descriptive characters for P. linearis are: “a variable low,” which cannot validate a species name. His remark that S. heterophyllum “appears to be a form approaching the narrowest-leaved P. cynanchoides” meant for a form cannot validate the species name and the form together.
