Remarks
Although this name might be considered to be a new name for Salix cordata Muhl., Neue Schriften Ges. Naturf. Freunde Berlin 4: 236. 1803, nom. illeg. [ = S. eriocephala Michx.], as suggested by Merrill (1949: 106), Rafinesque did not refer to Muhlenberg. Thus, the existence of an earlier Salix cordata Michx., Fl. Bor.-Amer. 2: 225. 19 Mar 1803, precludes treating Rafinesque's action as being an indirect reference to Muhlenberg(Lim et al., 2013)
