Remarks
In his remarks under Sphaeralcea, Kearney (in J. Wash. Acad. Sci. 29(11): 486. 15 Nov 1939) stated that the following combinations, previously published as subspecies, are here renamed as varieties in conformity with the practice of most American botanists. The references in parentheses are to pages in the publication in which the subspecies were published (in Kearney, Univ. calif. Publ. Bot. 19(1): 1-102. 20 Apr 1935). Since p. 36 in the 1935 publication shows S. axillaris (subsp.) violacea (Munz & Johnston) Kearney, his 1939 publication S. axillaris var. rosacea (Rose) Kearney (p. 36) is a correctable error for S. axillaris var. violacea (Rose) Kearney (p. 36). His 1939 publication includes, among others, S. ambigua var. rosacea (Rose) Kearney (p. 46).
